GROUP TWO – SETTING UP AN ACCOUNTING SYSTEM USING AN EXCEL CASHBOOK  includes an Excel assignment based around a small 'Sole Trader' business and enables us to test your competency in these financial services industry core units in a bookkeeper setting.

GROUP THREE — DEVELOP & IMPLEMENT A BOOKKEEPING BUSINESS builds on the Group 1 and Group 2 assignments. There are 5 assessments, starting with the creation of a business plan for a bookkeeping business and building through providing bookkeeping services, payroll, maintaining assets and inventory and finally the carrying out of tasks required to complete BAS returns for multiple entities.

Assessments

Students will be required to first set up a company file, chart of accounts, opening balances, customers, suppliers, inventory items, tax codes and payroll records for this entity in a computerised accounting system and then to enter an entire month’s transactions comprising of creditors invoices and payments of suppliers, sales invoices, adjustment notes and banking, petty cash, credit card and direct debit transactions, reconciliations of bank accounts and subsidiary ledgers and payroll transactions. End of period reporting, bad debt and end of year processes will complete the assessment.

All of the processing of accounting transactions will be conducted using MYOB. Accounting principles and concepts including accounting entities, chart of accounts, the accounting equation & double entry bookkeeping will be covered and assessed. We will not be teaching manual accounting procedures as we believe that the introduction of GST and the requirement to report transactions on the Business Activity Statement (BAS) on a cash basis, as well as an accrual basis, have rendered manual accounting almost redundant and it is far more important that students have an extensive knowledge of computerised accounting systems, such as MYOB and QuickBooks.

Students will also attain competency in MYOB as well as in basic bookkeeping and accounting principles.

The following learning materials will be provided for this course:

  • A PowerPoint presentation guides you through all of the lectures and prompts you when to complete a self-paced MYOB course or to complete your assessments.
  • MYOB Student Edition CD
  • CD of self-paced Exercises
  • Ready To Go with MYOB course Manual
  • MYOB Accounting Plus Payroll Manual
  • MYOB Accounting for GST & BAS Manual

  • Working in the Bookkeeping Industry Study Guide
